A Dark Day in Toronto For Cigar Smokers

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

Thomas Hinds Tobacconist in TorontoFrom Rich at CigarCyclopedia comes this news:

Another draconian smoking ban goes into effect today in the Canadian province of Ontario, including the formerly cosmopolitan city of Toronto.

“There is a cigar culture in Toronto,” noted Stephen Hajtun, speaking to The Globe and Mail, Canada’s most respected newspaper in an interview last week. Not any more, Stephen.

The ban covers smoking in all enclosed spaces, including retail tobacco stores!

“The impact will be disastrous” was the comment from well-known tobacconist Thomas Hinds, whose store in the Yorkville section of Toronto has been a destination for smokers for 35 years.

Cigar Review: Diablo Caliente

Wednesday, May 31st, 2006

Summary:

A mild to medium-bodied, maduro cigar with a rough-appearing and veiny wrapper that is oscuro-dark black. Those looking for a “wicked touch of spice” in their cigars should probably look elsewhere however…and that probably explains why this cigar has gone from being a promising devil to a ghost of Halloween past.

Those of you familiar with my cigar reviews should know that this one is a bit different. The Diablo line has been discontinued by the manufacturer due to low sales. If you want to try this cigar, you will have to hurry, search out the few suppliers who still have it in stock — and it will probably be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for you.

So, why the review?

As I said, I’m doing something a little different here. This review is the first installment in a two part series. The first part, which you are reading, will review the cigar independent of its marketing campaign and hype. Think of it as similar to a blind tasting — or as similar as I can possibly make it.

The second article, which will follow, will focus on the question of “what went wrong,” and I frankly find that question quite interesting. Hopefully, so will you.

When the Diablo line was introduced, there was much fanfare and a well-coordinated guerilla marketing campaign that a lot of time and effort went into. The cigar was created by a really talented blender, and is really not a bad cigar at all. Despite that, only a little over a year later, the cigar is history. Considering that it was backed by one of the major companies in the industry, I think that the Diablo story deserves a second look.

So, enjoy the review today and come back for the post-mortem soon.

CE Cigar Rating: 85

Second-Hand Smoke Craziness - Part Two

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006

Are we heading to a new Prohibition? Or has it already arrived for smokers? If you have not been living in a cave for the last thirty years of so, you have been exposed to a lot of talk about the dangers of “second-hand” smoke.

Everyone knows that second-hand smoke is dangerous. We hear it constantly — especially in this time when smoking bans are commonplace and that proverbial cave looks like the last place that smokers will be allowed to hide in to light up.

Until, of course, someone complains that the bats and other cave wildlife will be harmed by tobacco.

One important statistic on the dangers of second-hand smoke comes from a definitive, careful study showing a clear-cut link between second-hand smoke and cancer in humans. The findings of the study, undertaken by the World Health Organization, were published in 1998. Their multi-year investigation found an unquestionable 22% relationship between cancer in adults and whether or not they had been exposed to “second-hand” smoke as a child.

A 22% relationship between second-hand smoke and cancer is much too clear to dispute. It is not a statistical anomaly. It is a proven fact.

The only problem is that the WHO study found a 22% decrease in the chances of adults getting cancer who had been exposed to smoke as a child.

Cigar Review: Indian Tabac Super Fuerte Robusto

Saturday, May 27th, 2006

Richard at Blank Mind Blog has an interesting short review up of the Indian Tabac Super Fuerte Robusto. Indian Tabac CigarsAs usual, along with some excellent comments on the cigar itself, you’ll be treated to Richard’s trademarked observations on the world around him as he enjoys a smoke.

Along with the good, he points out a few flaws that he found with the cigar. Here’s a short taste of his writing:

The Indian Tabac Super Fuerte Robusto represents my standard robusto, 5″ in length with a 50 size ring gauge. It is box pressed, aged 4 years and has a Honduran Corojo seed natural wrapper. The wrapper is light medium brown with few veins, however, I can see where the wrapper leaf makes it final wrap. There is a light sheen of oil on the wrapper and it has a tobacco and cedar aroma.

Cigar Advertising In Europe Really Catches Your Attention

Friday, May 26th, 2006

Some cigars are rolled by hand...First, let me warn you that clicking on some of the links in this post will take you to view things that are definitely NSFW (not safe for work).

This part of the post is PG-rated, unless like many in our over-politically-correct time, you think that cigars and smoking are R or X-rated subjects by themselves. The European television advertisements shown on the next page, however, would never get on the air in the U.S.A. even if they weren’t advertising tobacco products.

More’s the pity.

They are quite funny and very well done. They are advertisements for Independence Cigars, and the link to their website is also safe. Independence cigars are short-fillers, and I’m not sure if they have a North American distributor. The company is owned by Arnold André, one of the leading German manufacturers of cigars and cigarillos that was founded in 1817, and they seem to have learned quite a bit about marketing in that time.

The NSFW ads are below the fold.

Second-Hand Smoke Craziness - Part One

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

Under the heading of “stop the insanity,” here’s the latest craziness on the myth of second-hand smoke.

Kittens should not smoke! This is wrong! The assault on smoking is moving into its next phase. Not satisfied with outlawing smoking in public buildings, and even near public buildings in many places, the True Believers continue to mount pressure to prevent smoking in private homes.

The press release which follows on the dangers of second-hand smoke does not come from the American Heart Association. It does not come from the American Cancer Society. It does not come from the Lung Association.

No, my friends, this warning of how second-hand smoke is a silent killer of the innocent comes from…

(drumroll, please)…

PETA.

That’s right. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. The group that brings you naked models, naked actresses, and naked celebrities promoting how evil it is to wear furs by their “I’d rather go naked” ads.

That, PETA.

Hang on to your hats. This one is…

…well, I’d call this a shaggy dog story, but it is really more of a fluffy kitty.
