City Council Extinguishes Proposed Smoking Ban in Wisconsin

Wednesday, July 12th, 2006

Smoking Ban Extinguished in WisconsinYou may have never heard of the city of Fitchburg, Wisconsin, before reading this story.

You may never hear about Fitchburg again.

But for now, for today, you need to know that in Fitchburg, Wisconsin, there is a local government that is sensible, believes in restraint, and does not pass legislation based on trends…and bad science.

Every once in a while, it is good to win one.

More from Emily Winter at The Capital Times in Madison, Wisconsin, below the fold.

Top Ten “Made In The USA” Cigars To Light Up The Fourth of July and Beyond: Part V

Read the Entire Article Series:  One  Two  Three  Four  Five

Light Up Your Fourth of July Celebration With Cigars Made in the USAThe fifth and final installment of this series brings us some cigars that you may not be familiar with.

If you have never tried today’s selections — or perhaps never even heard of them before — then you have been missing out on some true smoking pleasure. Both are quite worthy of being listed not only among the best USA-made cigars, but among the best cigars in the world.

In contrast to the heady prices of some of the earlier cigars in this series, the final two today are also rather modestly priced. Both brands would have to be considered “best buys” and true bargains.

For those coming late to this series, please take note of the fine print: The order in which cigars are presented in this series does not indicate relative quality or rating. It is not a top-to-bottom or bottom-to-top list. All cigars in this list are quite good, all are quite different, and each one is a #1 cigar in its own way.

Another thing that needs to be said in this look at some of the best cigars made in the United States currently is that it was not easy coming up with only ten. There are a lot of very fine cigars still being rolled in the U.S. of all strengths and bodies in some intriguing blends.

That was a pleasant surprise, since more and more brands are moving their manufacturing exclusively to Latin America. Old Powder Keg cigars, for example, from Connecticut Valley Tobacconist would have certainly been in this list…but they are now made in the Dominican Republic instead of in Connecticut.

In order to help me trim the list, I also arbitrarily eliminated a number of cigars that are made in the U.S.A., but in extremely limited numbers and/or do not have national distribution. I’m going to be highlighting some of these “micro-boutique” cigar lines in features over the next few weeks.

As I prepared the articles and ratings, I’ve had the pleasure of becoming reacquainted with some old favorites I haven’t sampled in a number of years, as well as finding some new favorites. None of the manufacturers listed here have paid or compensated me in any way in order to be included in this list — in fact, none of them even knew that their cigars were going to appear before they showed up in this Cigar Envy feature.

Now, on to today’s cigars. The reviews and ratings begin below the fold.

Change in Cigar Envy Subscription Service

Sunday, July 9th, 2006

Angelina Jolie smokes a cigar in Original SinI have been using a service called Bloglet to allow Cigar Envy site visitors to subscribe to email notices of new articles and information posted here. That is going to change.

I have been informed that Bloglet is going to cease operation soon, and so I am transferring the subscription service to Feedblitz.

Those of you who are current Bloglet subscribers will be getting an email from Feedblitz soon. It, like Bloglet, is a free service. You will unfortunately need to set up your account with them again, but they are making it especially quick and easy for people registered with Bloglet.

If you haven’t signed up for email updates, but would like to, just check out the Email Subscription heading in the near right column on any page of the site. Enter your email address into the box, click “Go!” and you will receive an email from FeedBlitz asking you to confirm your subscription. This double opt-in system allows me to make sure that no one is signed up for updates unless they really want to be signed up. I hate spam as much as you do.

You can also click on this link to FeedBlitz and sign up for the free email update service there.

This is a good place to mention that some important information for cigar dealers, retailers and manufacturers is below the fold.

Plus some information that will be of interest to everyone on special deals, discounts and free sample cigars.

Plus a photo of Rosanna Arquette that will be of special interest to cigar aficionados.

Top Ten “Made In The USA” Cigars To Light Up The Fourth of July and Beyond: Part IV

Read the Entire Article Series:  One  Two  Three  Four  Five

Light Up Your Fourth of July Celebration With Cigars Made in the USAThe fourth installment in this series on the best cigars made in the USA showcases two more cigars made in Florida.

One is a cigar that has been around for a long time and is a trusted name.

The other cigar is a newcomer, but has built a solid reputation in a surprisingly short time.

Both of these cigars have very loyal followings — for very good reasons.

Again, take note of the fine print: The order in which cigars are presented in this series does not indicate relative quality or rating. It is not a top-to-bottom or bottom-to-top list. All cigars in this list are quite good, all are quite different, and each one is a #1 cigar in its own way.

The cigar reviews and ratings begin below the fold.

Tatuaje Tainos Price Update

Friday, July 7th, 2006

Tatuaje Tainos at Discount PricesIn talking about the Tatuaje Tainos as one of the Top Ten Made-in-the-USA cigars for 2006, I mentioned that they were hard to find and expensive — and well worth the price.

Well, I have some good news on the price.

Shortly after the review and recommendation appeared, I got word that one of the retailers I mentioned was discounting their price on Tatuaje Tainos to the lowest I’ve ever seen them offered. Another online retailer, not mentioned in the original article (and of good reputation as well), is offering the cigars at the same price. This new price point gives you a chance to get a truly premium cigar at a price that is a bargain.

Both sources have Tainos available for delivery as of this writing.

Check out the new information below.

Tips on Cigars and Golf

Thursday, July 6th, 2006

Tips on Cigars and GolfFor the moment, at least, it is still possible to light up a cigar while enjoying a game of golf.

Even in San Francisco, thanks what I will charitably call a change of heart.

The Board of Supervisors in the City by the Bay had originally voted to ban smoking at the city’s five public golf courses. Fears of loss of revenue won out over charges of elitism and a puritanical desire to further curb freedom, so if you visit San Francisco you can still light up on the links.

That will not last, of course.

Eventually, the anti-smoking crazies will be moving to aggressively protect us from “Death by Second-Hand smoke” as the silent — and mythical — killer wafts from tee to tee. So, you had better enjoy the freedom to light up while golfing while you can.

And to help you enjoy golf and cigars a little more, we have some tips from the Stogie Guys.

The article contains four tips that are specific, and useful. More about that after the jump.
