Cigar Review: Onyx Reserve No. 2 Belicoso

Friday, April 28th, 2006

Summary:

A solid cigar that delivers excellent flavor in a mild to medium-bodied smoke. Never bitter, never harsh, always flavorful — but one dimensional and much milder than its dark Oscuro wrapper might lead you to expect. Very sensitive to humidity as well, and its finicky nature loses it points because of the effect it has on draw, burn and flavor. Still, a very good cigar and a definite step up from the regular Onyx line.

CE Cigar Rating: 89

Background Information:

This beautiful 7 inch, 50 ring gauge, figurado is long for a traditional Belicoso. It is a mild to medium-bodied cigar with an Oscuro Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper and a Nicaraguan binder. The filler a blend of Dominican, Nicaraguan, and Peruvian tobaccos. Manufactured by Tabacalera de Garcia Ltd. in the Dominican Republic for Altadis.

Cigar Review: Partagas Spanish Rosado Rojito

Tuesday, March 7th, 2006

Summary:

Excellent medium-body cigar, rich and complex in taste. This one goes in my personal humidor in the “everyday, short, evening smoke” category.

CE Cigar Rating: 93

Background Information:

The Rojito is 4 1/2″ long and has a ring gauge of 50 (making it a Rothschild even though you’ll often see it mis-called a Robusto). A Honduran San Agustin wrapper covers a binder made from Connecticut Broadleaf. The filler is an interesting blend of Dominican, Honduran and Mexican tobacco. The cigar is manufactured in the Dominican Republic at General Cigar’s Dominicana factory.

Cigar Review: Puros Indios Gorda

Wednesday, December 7th, 2005

Another good review — this one by Cigar Jack.

He sampled the Puros Indios Gorda, and here’s a bit of what he had to say:

“The Puros Indios Cigars were the latest selection of cigars offered up in the weekly tasting. The first thing these cigars impress you with is their size, but don’t be intimidated a kitten lurks in this stick.”

Check out the rest of the review and get the skinny on PI’s fat one.

Cigar Review: Camacho Corojo Toro

Wednesday, December 7th, 2005

Richard over at Blank Mind Blog has an interesting short review up of the Camacho Corojo Toro. As usual, he mixes some very good insights into the cigar with some other interesting observations made while enjoying the smoke. Here’s a short excerpt:

“The Camacho Corojo Toro is a beautifully made cigar. The wrapper was medium brown in color with a silky smooth, almost oily, feel to it. It balanced very well in my hand as I walked.”

I’ve had a case of the flu for the past week that just won’t quit, so further reviews of new sticks from me will wait a little longer until I can breathe. In the meantime, meader over to Richard’s place for an enjoyable time and find the answers to some burning questions about a cigar that gets a mixed review in the end.

Update on the Maria Guerrero Belicoso

Monday, December 5th, 2005

Maria Guerrero logoThe December 2005 issue of Cigar Aficionado has another review of the Maria Guerrero Belicoso. This is a cigar that I reviewed here at Cigar Envy last month, rating it a 95.

They still rate the cigar a 90, remarking on its “perfect draw and even burn.” They also mention “light coffee, tea and cream notes,” and “a kick of black pepper and toast on the finish.”

Even better than new rating information that doesn’t add anything to what you already know, there is also a special lower price on the cigar by one of the major retailers. The new price is lower than anything listed in my review. It is also lower than anything I’ve seen this cigar offered for before.

In addition to this special lower price not being listed in my November review — it also isn’t even listed on the retailers website yet.

Jump on this one.

Cigar Review: Oliva Master Blend 5.0×50

Tuesday, November 29th, 2005

Matt at Matt’s Cigar Journal recently published a mini-review of the Oliva Master Blend 5.0×50 that makes me want to run out and buy a box. Here’s a teaser to whet your appetite as well:

“This was a superb cigar. Full flavor and strong, this cigar gave me a pretty wicked buzz. It had a strong woody flavor and was surprisingly smooth for such a full flavored cigar. “

In no-nonsense, direct terms, Matt gives the basics of exactly what makes the Master Blend a superior smoke and why you might enjoy one. Check out the full review at Matt’s Cigar Blog, and look around a little while you’re there. He’s got some other very good reviews and articles as well.
